Coaching Philosophy

The Game of Baseball: Just about every athlete that plays a sport has played the game of baseball at one point in their life. The first sport that we all love to play is baseball. Baseball is the ultimate team sport that allows for one to stand out as an individual. Baseball is a game, but it teaches us life lessons. It provides many athletes an outlet to have a better life and to accomplish their dreams. Coaching: What is the coaches’ job? The coach has many responsibilities. The biggest responsibility/job of a coach is to provide leadership and direction for the players, other coaches, and his program as a whole. I believe that as a coach, another responsibility is to get the most out of my players on and off the field. By this I mean that a coach should put in the time and effort to maximize all the potential talent that the player has as a little league, high school, college, or major league baseball player. I did not get into coaching to live through my players. I became a coach so that I can teach the game of baseball so to help provide educational and professional opportunities for student athletes just as someone did for me. As previously mention, baseball teaches us life lessons. Through my coaching, I try to get players to be tough competitors to compete on a daily basis. I want them to know that in life and baseball, nothing will be given to them. Also, I teach that hard work pays off and whatever you put into it is what you get out of it. Personally, I know that when the game is taught the right way, players will demonstrate good sportsmanship and class. When players are taught how to show good sportsmanship and class then they will understand how to handle winning and losing. The Student-Athlete: It is an honor to have the title of student-athlete. Everyone cannot be a student-athlete. I believe that all student-athletes should be schooled on the meaning of the title. All players regardless of the sport they play needs to understand that they are students first and an athlete second. If they cannot take care of their responsibilities in the classroom then they will not have the privilege to be on the field. Once again, what you put into it is what you get out of it (a life lesson used in the classroom as well as baseball). If a player cannot put forth the same effort in the classroom as they do on the field then they do not need to play, regardless of how good of an athlete they are. Student-athletes need to know that sports can be taken away, but an education and what they learn will stay with them. In closing, I would like to reiterate that baseball is a game loved by millions. With that said, it is not life or death. For the two to two and a half hours spent practicing and playing games, baseball is the most important thing at that time. Once that time span is over, it is over and you have to move on win or lose. It is important for the student-athlete to feel excited after a win and disappointment after a loss. However, it is equally important to understand that tomorrow is a new day and they have to move on win or lose.
